About Judy Powell
Judy Powell was the Director of the Crystal River High School Health Academy. Powell’s passion for education began when she began her college career at Florida State University. Powell had aspirations of becoming a French translator for the United Nations. At the time, she was 17 years old, and discovered she was much better at English than French. She decided to change her career, and become an English teacher.
Mrs. Powell has traveled as far as Hawaii to teach, and eventually came back to Florida in 1993. In the early 90's, Mrs. Powell began teaching English at CRHS where later, she took on a leadership role in the first Health Academy established in Citrus County. Powell, up until her accident, was in charge of the academy which has 170 students enrolled in the health classes offered by the academy. Powell recently was chosen for Teacher of the Year award for CRHS, but also went on to win the County-wide competition.
Mrs. Powell is known throughout the community for her dedication to the academy and her students. Mrs. Powell was an avid surfer, who traveled to Daytona on the weekends to spend time with her husband at their home they built for their retirement, and to surf to waters of Daytona. She was expected to retire at the end of this year.
