Friends and former students of a former Citrus County teacher are working to help a teacher who helped so many students during her career. Judy Powell was a longtime teacher at Crystal River High School. She was nominated for teacher of the year for the 2006-2007 school year in Citrus County. But on her way to her new home in Daytona where she was planning to spend her retirement, Powell was involved in a vehicle crash that left her a quadriplegic. Powell's dream home, a two-story stilt house, became a nightmare for her. But some of her former students and friends, such as former coworker and friend Diane Holmes, are determined to help out by raising money for an elevator.
"She's done so much for other people that for her to have this devastating accident occur, and then lose her home on top of it, would just be unbelievable," Holmes said. "So if we can get the elevator for her she can stay."
More Information
Holmes has already organized fundraisers that have raised over $12,000 for the Judy Powell Foundation. The goal is to raise $45,000.
The Powells' insurance won't cover the cost of an elevator and its installation.
