Issue: Injured TeacherThis is a featured page

By The Chronicle

Teachers have always impacted the lives of their students. This is never more evident than in the case of Crystal River High School teacher Judy Powell. In February, Mrs. Powell was involved in a car crash that left her a quadriplegic. While she has been getting her life back together, her students -- both past and present -- are raising funds to help her. Mrs. Powell, a veteran English teacher at Crystal River High and former director of its Academy of Health Careers, planned to retire at the end of the 2007-08 school year. She and her husband built their dream retirement home in Daytona, with a vision of life in the sand and surf.

Judy Powell, who was once an avid runner and surfer, now depends on her husband to carry her around their two-story home. Friends of Powell are trying to raise $46,000 to pay for an elevator and have it installed in the home. They?re asking everyone in Citrus County to help. Diane Holmes, the current Academy of Health Careers director and Powell's friend said, "She's had such an impact on this community." Her students thought she was special, too. During the last week of school students and friends raised $4,700.

The public is encouraged to come out and support the many fundraisers that are planned throughout the county and to give beyond the event?s ticket cost. Many of Mrs. Powell's students have become health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care facilities and physicians offices. It is encouraging to see how they have become productive citizens in the community and to remember a teacher who had such an influence on their lives.

In updating friends about Ms. Powell, Holmes wrote in an e-mail: "She said she is overwhelmed by the support she is receiving. She said she had no idea people cared about her so much."

Citrus County, let's show just how much support we can give! By working together as a community, we can get the elevator in the Judy Powell's home.
